Mr. Vijay Kumar Jatia
Chairman, Indian Institute of Jewellery & Chairman, Modern India Ltd.

Mr. Vijay Kumar Jatia is Chairman, Indian Institute of Jewellery and Chairman, Modern India Ltd. With over 35 years of extensive experience in the industry, he hails from a self-made, entrepreneurial family that has played a pivotal role in putting Mumbai on the industrial map.

His journey with Modern India Ltd. began at a time when it was still known as The Modern Mills Ltd. with two divisions - textiles and solvent extraction.  The textile division was closed down. However, as a scheme of rehabilitation was approved by the Government, the textile division was re-opened and the company then diversified into real estate activity and has made the then tallest residential building in Mumbai in a joint venture with Great Eastern Shipping Company Limited (GESCO). Thereafter the mill building has been successfully turned into a business centre

Mr. Jatia has been actively involved as Chairman of the All India Cotton Seed Crushers Association for two terms. He has been keenly interested in and is a member of the Indian Merchants Chambers and Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). He is also actively involved in the Mill Owners Association which is an organization for the textile industry. He also served on various committees in the Rotary Club of Bombay where at present he is a Director.

Mr. Jatia has also been Co‐Chairman, Committee on Industry and Environment of the Indian Merchants Chambers (IMC), member of Western Regional Council of Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) since inception and served on various Committees. Mr. Jatia has been Member governing body, Chairman, Western Region of Indian Paints Association. He has served on various committees and also held post of Director of Rotary Club of Bombay.

Between 1990 and 2001, Mr. Jatia was the Joint Managing Director of the Pudumjee Pulp and Paper Mills Limited. Apart from general management, he was also in charge of treasury, finance and legal aspects of the Company. He was involved in negotiating a successful joint venture with Kimberly Clark of USA a fortune 500 company for manufacturing and marketing specialty tissue products.

In 1977, Mr. Jatia was appointed Director in Hardcastle & Waud Manufacturing Ltd, a company with a turnover of Rs. 25 million while assuming office and when he relinquished it, the company had turnover of Rs. 250 million. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Joint Venture between Houghton Hardcastle (India) Ltd. with E.F Houghton & Co., USA and Hardcastle & Waud. During this time, a collaboration agreement with M/s. Liberty Paints of Belgium was entered into for the manufacture of Powder Coating, following which the product was successfully launched in India with great success.

Under leadership of Mr. V. K. Jatia, Modern India Enterprises (Group of companies) has launched various new verticals and projects and highlights of this are as under:
  • Modern India Limited is undertaking development of its South Mumbai land in collaboration with K Raheja Corp. Pvt. Limited
  • Modern International Asia Limited a subsidiary of Modern India Limited incorporated in Hong Kong is undertaking international trading
  • Guangzhou Modern Trading Company Limited is incorporated in China to undertake international trading by procuring tailor made merchandise from China and shipping across the globe
  • Modern International Middle East (FZC) a company established in Middle East to procure merchandise from free trade zone(s) of Middle East and ship across globe.
Mr. Vijay Kumar Jatia is an alumnus of University of Mumbai and is a strong advocator of the power of education. He is also very passionate about all kinds of sports, is an avid reader and enjoys socializing with people whenever time permits.
